Eliza’s Take on Himalayan SALT Lamps – Benefit or Hoax?

Himalayan SALT Lamps have become the latest trend and have gained in popularity once again…. But do they work?

I’m sure you have heard of Himalayan SALT lamps or know someone who owns one.

You can buy Himalayan salt at your grocery store. It has a pinkish color, and some people use it in place of regular table salt. Not only can you find Himalayan salt in food-seasoning such as salt, Himalayan salt is also used in the popular Himalayan Salt Lamps that have been popping up recently everywhere in stores that I visit.

I’ve noticed them at Walmart, Bed Bath Beyond, Costco and my favorite place to shop – Amazon.

With the increased popularity has brought lots of claims about their benefits. In this article, I’ll try to give you my take on the suggested benefits, and why lot of people seem to have fallen in love with these ‘glowing’ lamps!

TIP: If you’re just looking for a high quality Himalayan SALT lamp for your home and you are not concerned about the scientific evidence, this is the Himalayan Salt Lamp that I have in several rooms in my home – Levoit Himalayan Salt Lamp.

A Salt lamp is created out of Himalayan pink salt crystals that are found in the Himalayan mountains, specifically in the Foothills of the Punjab region of Pakistan. This pink salt is used in lots of different things from cooking blocks for grilling to “salt therapies” at spas.

Himalayan Salt lamps are made of large chunks of pure mined Himalayan Salt that is then hollowed out and has a small bulb that fits inside and lights up warming the salt lamp.

Salt lamps can be purchased as one small, medium or large chunk or they can be in placed in containers – like baskets with either one large or several smaller crystals.

They can provide your room with a beautiful ambiance of orange/pink colors that glow when plugged in. Some people “swear” that they have various health benefits.

Not only does the Salt lamp add a beautiful ambiance to your home, it reportedly has loads of health benefits, thanks to those negative ions it is said to emit.

The lamps are advertised by various companies to improve air quality. This is said to supposedly make it easier to sleep at night and relieve symptoms of allergies or asthma.

They are also said to boost your mood and your energy levels. There are claims that they can help people experiencing symptoms from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or depression, too.

Now, I know what you might be thinking: These Himalayan salt lamp benefits sound too good to be true. And often things that are too good to be true – often are. Read on to see what I found out….

You are probably wondering how do these beautiful lamps provide all these health benefits. Companies selling these lamps claim they generate negative ions that also attract allergens and pollutants from the air to the salt surface.

There are two basic principles:

1. Salt is HYGROSCOPIC, which simply means that salt attracts water molecules from the air. These water molecules attract and trap dust, mold, pollutants and bacteria. In theory cleaning the air you breathe.

Companies propose that the salt lamp attracts the water molecules in your room pulling in all the pollutants attached to these water molecules.

Then, as the bulb heats the lamp, the water vapor is released back into the air, and the salt on the lamp holds onto these pollutants. It is a good idea to wipe down the salt lamp with a cloth a few times a month to keep it clean.

2. Himalayan salt is also theorized to release NEGATIVE IONS into the surrounding air. Negative ions are oxygen atoms with an extra electron. In theory, they clean the air that we breathe by removing positive charged icons.

However, it is said that Salt Lamps do not generate negative Ions in large enough amounts to be considered therapeutic. If you are looking for something to absorb all those positive ions in your house (from electronics, appliances, WIFI, etc.) you might be better off looking at a negative ion generator or spending more time outdoors according to some of the experts (Check back for an article on this topic in the near future).

It is true that the evaporation of the attracted water combined with heat will produce negative ions. You will have to form your own opinion and decide for yourself if there are enough negative ions to support cleaning the air in your home.

There are many different types of salt lamps and a variety of colors to choose from. For the most part your choice comes down to finding a lamp that suits your tastes and complements your home decor.

Be careful of companies selling fake Himalayan salt crystal lamp. You should look for a salt lamp that gives off a soft warm glow. Lamps that give off a lot of light are often not authentic.

Also, keep in mind Himalayan white crystals do exist but are very rare and expensive. A white crystal lamp at a low price may not be made of real Himalayan salt.

Lastly, make sure the crystals in your salt lamp were mined from the Himalayas area of Pakistan – “the only place where true Himalayan salt is found” according to Wikipedia.

You can’t go wrong with either the Levoit Elana Himalayan Salt Lamp or the Himalayan Glow 1001 Pink Salt Lamp as they both get great reviews and are listed as top sellers on Amazon Canada.

I personally purchased the Levoit Elana Himalayan Salt Lamp and the deciding factor for me was aesthetics. I wanted the white cord versus the black one.

MY REVIEW OF THE Levoit Elana Himalayan Salt Lamp

I own three Levoit Salt Lamps – 2 smaller ones and one larger one which gets a very high rating on Amazon. I keep the 2 smaller ones in the bedrooms and the larger one in my living room.

The smaller ones make great night lights for the bedroom, and hopefully all three collect some of the dust and pollutants in these rooms.

Your Himalayan salt lamp should last you forever, if you take care of it. Salt lamps should not be submerged in water. They also do not do well in high levels of humidity.

Because each Salt Lamp is unique they can come in different shapes – a few people felt they would like to have seen it first to get the shape they wanted.

SADLY: The bottom line:

The Levoit Elana Himalayan Salt Lamp is a beautiful piece to add to your home. It would be an attractive item to have on your mantle, bedside table, mindful space or anywhere you desire.

Unfortunately the health claims, have not been proven by scientific evidence. The questions: Do Himalayan salt lamps positively affect health? Do negative ions benefit health? And if they do benefit health, do these salt lamps produce negative ions in large enough quantities to make a difference to our health?

“I’m sad to be saying that this is a hoax, if  you only look at the lack of substantial scientific studies”.

However even though there doesn’t appear to be any large studies confirming the health benefits of using a Salt lamp, there are lots of people who are providing anecdotal evidence that they have seen a difference in their health since purchasing a salt lamp.

There also seem to be some experts that say there might be a placebo effect. As you may have guessed you can Google just about anything on the internet and find support from people on both sides…mostly anecdotal but there are a few smaller studies too.

I am leaning towards thinking that salt lamps are helpful to your health even if it is a placebo effect. If the salt lamp is calming and you believe it to be helpful and it’s a positive experience for you then perhaps you are looking at the Law of Attraction?

When you think of the salt lamp being calming, beautiful, peaceful and those thoughts go out the Universe and then you attract what you think…

As I mentioned earlier, I do own three salt lamps, I like how they make me feel and I definitely see that they attract dust particles and need cleaning often.

With or without studies to prove this or not, I like to think that when the salt lamp is working there are healing benefits to the lamp. I am moving toward a more mindful, way of lifestyle. I’m continuing to learn about energy and the law of attraction and the thought that everything stems from intentions or thoughts – I love to set affirmations for myself every day.

NOW even if the health benefits can’t be proven there does not appear to be any evidence stating that using a Salt Lamp will effective your health negatively.

Create a “mindful” space with your Salt Lamp.

Even if no one has spent a lot of money studying the effects of salt lamps, owning a Levoit Elana Himalayan Salt Lamp could be that perfect addition to creating a mindful space, and helping you live a more healthy lifestyle.

It could be added to an altar, placed on a desk or dresser, coffee table to give that meditative space in your home.

(Moving towards adding items to my health and wellness plan is a priority for me this year. – Check back soon to see my article on “Creating a Mindful Space”)

My Final Thoughts….

Some people think salt lamps are a hoax while others claim they feel and breathe better due to their salt lamps.

What do I think?

I think that salt lamps do help with air quality in my rooms. My Pink Himalayan salt lamps provide a soothing, therapeutic glow and seem to make a difference to how I feel when I am in those rooms. I definitely notice a difference when I turn them off and my quality of sleep.

Whether you’re looking to improve the atmosphere in your home, office or create a space that inspires you to be mindful or live a healthy lifestyle a Levoit Elana Himalayan Salt Lamp may be the perfect option for you. AND who knows as more natural ways of solving our health issues become popular, research may eventually support the benefit claims of salt lamps. After all … those people who claim that Salt lamps have health benefits can’t be wrong – or can they?

What are your thoughts?

Please feel free to leave your comments below. I’d love to know if you use a Salt Lamp and if you do… Do you see any benefits?

  1. Hi Liz,
I own a Pink Himalayan salt lamp. I don’t use it as often as I should, I think I will turn it on when I am finished commenting here…lol.
I love my lamp and I feel that it does improve my living space. I bought it a number of years ago as I thought it might help counteract the positive ions in the air caused by so many things in our environment.
If something makes me feel good, then it is good, whether science supports it or not. We all have to decide for ourselves.
I loved your article, thanks for the time you spent reviewing this item.
    Take good care,

    1. I so agree…I have my Himalayan Salt Lamp on all the time. The Levoit Himalayan Salt Lamp has a bulb that lasts along time. I’ve had it for over a year and I’ve only had to change the bulb once. I am a firm believer in looking to natural ways to improve my health and lifestyle … and I think that sometimes Science just hasn’t caught up! It is always a good thing to do your own research and then make an informed choice for yourself. Most people either love their salt lamp or find it just doesn’t work for them… and that’s ok! Good to hear you love yours!
      Thanks for stopping by,
      Cheers, Eliza
